Before I begin, I would like to note for all of the residents, here and at home, that this project is privately funded - that means the money is there waiting, ready to go. Once approved, construction will begin. It is incredibly important that we as a community remain vigilant.
We must continue to show up for meetings, write our representatives and band together as a community if we wish to stop the bulldozers.
Senator Peters mentioned in his comments that our representatives' opinions will be crafted based on the views that we express at this meeting, and those going forward. I implore all of our representatives to keep that promise and keep an open ear as your constituents speak.
You represent us.
One of the four routes that the developers are looking at, cuts directly through the Rockledge neighborhood in Bowie, carving out a 1,000ft corridor, and taking out as many as 263 homes by Eminent Domain. This is not only unacceptable, it is a violation of private property rights and an abuse of government power.
Bowie citizens are sick and tired of being told what we want, and why we want it.
This project will provide neither commercial, nor economic benefits for Bowie and will do more harm than good. Make no mistake: this project will irreparably damage our community.
Frankly, I am not interested in the empty promises offered of "potential" jobs this project will bring Bowie, or the "potential" for a cleaner environment when air and road traffic is "potentially" decreased. I am concerned about protecting the integrity of my home and my community. I am concerned about maintaining my neighbors' quality of life. I am concerned about preserving historic sites and green spaces throughout Bowie.
The MAGLEV will destroy ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
This is a for profit project, and that, above everything else, is the developers concern.
Bowie residents are clear on this issue: We do not want it. We do not need it. No to the SCMaglev train.
